Heart of England League (Worcester) - 7 May 2017

Team Managers View - U15 and U17

Coventry took a full coach of athletes and supporters to Worcester for the 1st Match of the Heart of England League. And what a glorious day it was! The sun shone on a packed bank of athletes and supporters as the action unfurled on the track and in the field.

On the track :

Many of the hurdlers are getting used to new heights and distances and posted excellent performances in high class competition.  There were many pbs in the middle distance races, despite a strong head wind in the back straight – again, high class opposition  encouraging determined performances. The wind that presented such a challenge for the middle distance runners pushed the sprinters to some excellent times, notably for Tobi in the 100m and 200m.

In the field :

The highlights of the field events were the High Jump, with both Pierce and Alize posting excellent pb jumps, and the shot with fine puts from Tom and Jessica.

Managers pick:

On a day with many fine performances the highlights for me were :

  • Tom Keenan and Adrian Judge for big pbs in 1500m and 800m respectively

  • Georgina McCunn for an excellent run over the 75m hurdles, and

  • Dontae and Robsan for the realisation that they actually quite enjoyed the 300m!

Athletes View

In contrast to the overcast and windy upper age YDL athletics meet on home soil , just 7 days ago, the Heart of England in Worcester meet was bathed in glorious sunshine. The grass around the track was covered in  colourful camping chairs and tents where spectators and athletes alike soaked up the raise. As one parent pointed out we'd all managed to receive our monthly dose of Vitamin D. With the sunshine boosting everyone's mood, it was no surprise to see some excellent performances.

The endurance team was well represented and yet again we participated in some field events and relays. There were many excellent performances in the 1500m and 800m and it is fair to say that athletes improved on times and places compared to performances in the upper and lower YDL's. This included a finish line battle in the 1500m between Tom and Hayden (2 of our u13 endurance athletes).

The participation by the crowd and friends of athletes was just as motivating as chasing the person down in front of you.

Overall the day was a colossal success, proving yet again that all the effort in training had boosted our performances.
